Transcription: This relief is titled William Penn's Treaty with the Indians. It was completed by Nicholas Gevola in 1827. William Penn was an English Quaker who, seeking an end to religious persecution, convinced King Charles II to allow him to colonize in America. His religious colony of friends was established in what is now the state of Pennsylvania. Penn lived from 1644 to 1718.
